Victoria dinner cruise
Your skipper Darren Tomlin is an experienced chef having run a mountain lodge and restaurant for ten years and a guest house in Sidney for twelve years, so come expecting a taste of fine West coast cuisine on your Victoria dinner cruise as you sail through the Gulf Islands. We’ll start with an instructional sail with the wind in your face as you trim the sails and be part of the crew. Then we find a secluded bay to anchor for a sunset dinner on board Desiderata.
Rate: $149 pp* (~ 3 hours, with dinner). Three person minimum.
Sidney BC through the Gulf Islands
Before leaving the dock everyone puts on a lightweight inflatable life jacket and all the safety features of the boat are explained. Then Desiderata motors gently through the docks and out of the breakwater to the open sea to everyone’s great anticipation. Darren takes his novice crew through basic sailing techniques, the jib is raised and the sail boat becomes … a sail boat! Technical instruction is actually immense fun as sailors are born under Darren’s guidance learning basic navigation and skills such as going about and tacking manoeuvres. Best of all is the chance to take the helm, watching the wind and sails and using the chart, depth and speed display.
Throughout, relaxing smiles and happy conversation are dominant as we watch the magnificent scenery, the wildlife and other vessels. The closest of the Gulf Islands draw closer – Sidney Island which is part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve with Sidney Spit at its northern end, D’Arcy Island which was a Chinese leper colony 100 or so years ago, and private James Island. You’ll sail close to the shore, drop anchor and Darren will disappear down to the galley from where wonderful smells soon emerge.
A typical dinner might be:
An appetiser tray of smoked salmon on French bread with cherry tomatoes and grapes.
A barbecued course of marinated salmon (which Darren may have caught himself) with vegetables from his parents garden. These are all added to a tasty thick broth flavoured with coconut milk and with a little paprika and cumin. Sooo tasty!
“What a Awesome Experience this was. From stepping on the Sail boat to the Raising of the Sail, I was in Awe … The Food was so Good and to Sail back with the Beautiful Sunset was Breathtaking“. Lise, Beaver County, Alberta.
Relaxed and content, you motor slowly back to the marina, maybe as the moon rises … a trip you’ll long remember.
“Was my first time sailing, was already excited ahead of time for a new adventure; however, words cannot describe just how incredibly amazing it was. Darren was most attentive to our needs from explaining the what to do and expect prior to sailing, but incredibly, giving us an actual hands on sailing the boat ourselves experience.
When we thought it couldn’t get any better, we docked close to an island shoreline, where he proceeded to bbq a marinated gourmet vegetable and salmon stew, my mouth still waters. During our dinner mother nature offered not only a picturesque sunset, but a full moon arising. All I can say is WOW, to the entire experience.” Bev, Edmonton, Alberta
